Six police officers were injured when a pro-Palestinian protest in front of the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday.
U.S. Capitol Police told Fox News that roughly 150 demonstrators were "illegally and violently protesting" near the headquarters. Participants, however, said the number of people protesting the Middle East war was closer to 300.
Along with Capitol Police, around 150 officers from the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department also responded to the protest. Video footage from the demonstration captured confrontations between police and protests.
According to police, officers' injuries included pepper spray burns and cuts when they clashed with demonstrators.
As the protest escalated, police evacuated the headquarters, which was hosting a reception party at the time. At least seven lawmakers were brought to the building's basement before being taken away in police vehicles.
"Was just evacuated from the DNC after pro-terrorist, anti-Israel protestors grew violent, pepper spraying police officers and attempting to break into the building. Thankful to the police officers who stopped them and for helping me and my colleagues get out safely," Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
